| Description | D-Arabitol, also known as D-lyxitol or D-arabinol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as sugar alcohols. These are hydrogenated forms of carbohydrate in which the carbonyl group (aldehyde or ketone, reducing sugar) has been reduced to a primary or secondary hydroxyl group. D-Arabitol exists as a solid, possibly soluble (in water), and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa) molecule. D-Arabitol exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. D-Arabitol is a potentially toxic compound. D-Arabitol has been found to be associated with several diseases known as colorectal cancer, invasive candidiasis, and eosinophilic esophagitis; also d-arabitol has been linked to the inborn metabolic disorders including ribose-5-phosphate isomerase deficiency. |
