Metabolite Identification
Common NameL-Arabitol
DescriptionL-Arabitol, also known as L-lyxitol or L-arabinitol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as sugar alcohols. These are hydrogenated forms of carbohydrate in which the carbonyl group (aldehyde or ketone, reducing sugar) has been reduced to a primary or secondary hydroxyl group. L-Arabitol is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). L-Arabitol exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. L-Arabitol, with regard to humans, has been found to be associated with several diseases such as alzheimer's disease, uremia, and colorectal cancer; L-arabitol has also been linked to the inborn metabolic disorder ribose-5-phosphate isomerase deficiency.
