DescriptionVaccenic acid, also known as 18:1 trans-11 or 11(e)-vaccenate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as long-chain fatty acids. These are fatty acids with an aliphatic tail that contains between 13 and 21 carbon atoms. Vaccenic acid exists as a solid, very hydrophobic, practically insoluble (in water), and relatively neutral molecule. Vaccenic acid exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Vaccenic acid has been found to be associated with several diseases known as obesity and colorectal cancer; also vaccenic acid has been linked to several inborn metabolic disorders including isovaleric acidemia and 11-beta-hydroxylase deficiency.
