Metabolite Identification
Common NameHeme A
DescriptionHeme a belongs to the class of organic compounds known as metallotetrapyrroles. These are polycyclic compounds containing a tetrapyrrole skeleton combined with a metal atom. Heme a is possibly soluble (in water) and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Heme a exists in all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans. In cattle, heme a is involved in the metabolic pathway called the porphyrin metabolism pathway.
