Sugar acids and derivatives are compounds containing a saccharide unit which bears a carboxylic acid group. 2-Phospho-D-glyceric acid is an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). 2-Phospho-D-glyceric acid exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans.
